Mother and child

They are two individuals of course, but a mother and her child are inseparable. Their primeval unity is the symbol of peace, tranquility, harmony and happiness. But also of loving attention, all-pervasive love and an all-encompassing “universe”.

Willem Hofhuizen once said that he only painted things that were beautiful. When his third and last grandchild was born, he made this “apollonian” painting, in which we see the typical “Hofhuizen woman” with a pearl necklace and a black dress, leaning against the same foot cushion that also featured in “The Mystery that is Woman” from 1964.
